In 1997, Thomas W. Theune, OD had an idea to create significant, merit-based scholarships to inspire and support the pursuit of higher education for visually impaired and blind students in Colorado. This higher level of education is to enhance both career and personal success. The scholarships would also provide awareness of the amazing abilities of blind and visually impaired students.
The idea caught-on with educators, optometrists, ophthalmologists, opticians, corporations and many people with an interest in enhancing the lives of visually impaired and blind students. It was a generous donation of $5,000 by Mr. & Mrs. Gary Rocks and the Rocks Family Foundation that provided the initial spark that lit the fire for further support of the SEE THE FUTURE Fund.
To Date: Over $789,000 has been awarded to 165 recipients embarking on numerous careers including accounting, business, teaching, computer engineering, massage therapy and many more.
Tools for Life
In 2007, additional funding was created to support the Tools for Life program. This need-based program assists families in purchasing necessary and appropriate adaptive equipment to support literacy and the pursuit of higher education.
To Date: Over $290,000 has been awarded to over 153 families.
